WASHINGTON, D.C., September 14, 2026 — Save America’s Working Vehicles Executive Director Todd Cranney sent a letter to House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith, Ranking Member Richard Neal, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo, and Ranking Member Ron Wyden, urging legislative leaders to champion full and permanent relief from Section 232 metal tariffs on off-road working vehicles, including All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs).
Section 232 steel tariffs on off-road working vehicles are assessed against the vehicles’ full customs value rather than their metal content. The result is a duty that can add as much as $5,000 to the cost of a single ATV or UTV, while tariffs on vehicle parts further raise repair and maintenance costs. For farmers and ranchers already running older equipment longer, stretching repair budgets, and deferring maintenance, those added costs are simply unaffordable.
Cranney urged legislative leaders to advance permanent, targeted relief for the off-road working vehicles relied upon by farmers, ranchers, energy producers, and front-line responders across the country.
“A tariff designed to strengthen domestic metals production was never meant to arrive as a several-thousand-dollar equipment penalty on family farms, local emergency response teams, and energy producers,” Cranney wrote. “Full relief for off-road working vehicles is a commonsense, America First correction that leaves the tariff’s protection for domestic metals production intact while keeping the bill off the people who keep this country fed, powered, and safe.”
On a busy farm, ATVs and UTVs are not toys. They move tools and repair parts between fields. In orchards, they fit between rows where larger equipment cannot operate. For linemen and pipeline workers, they cover miles of terrain that no truck can follow. In rescue operations, they allow access to hard-to-reach locations. For America’s farmers, ranchers, energy producers, and front-line responders, these vehicles are essential working assets.
The letter recognizes the steps President Trump and his Administration have taken to support American farmers and ranchers, while emphasizing that legislative action to fully and permanently eliminate Section 232 tariffs on off-road working vehicles would provide immediate, tangible relief. Motorcycles and e-bikes have already received relief from these tariffs, but the ATVs and UTVs that working Americans depend upon every day have not.
